Experience and knowledge are important tools for
creating successful web designs. But imagination is the
most important tool of all.
That’s why I take time every day to give my conscious
mind a rest and let my imagination take over. Sometimes
that means rowing a boat on nearby Lake Calhoun with occasional
side trips up the channel to Lake of the Isles * when the
weather is particularly fine and I don’t have a pressing
deadline. Other days, it means rowing down the Mighty Mississippi
between the dramatic limestone bluffs that line the river
as it sweeps through the Twin Cities. When the weather turns
cold and there’s snow on the ground, I take out my
cross-county skis and cruise around the wooded trails that
wind their way through our local park system.
While rowing and skiing may seem far removed from web design,
they’re really not. The whole time I’m engaged
in these and other kinds of meditative activities, my mind
is refreshing itself and my imagination is at work. I’ll
never bill you for the hours I spend recharging my creativity,
but that doesn’t mean I’m not putting that time
to good use for you and my other clients.
