Took a four-month bike trip summer of 2016. I biked alone for three months (summarized below). I then met up with Kathy in Sacramento and she joined me for a one month bike trip. Here's a link to Kathy's trip
Also in Sacramento I got to meet my new grand daughter.
COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT
Grand Junction, Colorado. The day before I started my trip - 4/14/2016 - I flew Mpls to Denver then drove a rental car to Grand Junction.
MIKE THE HEADLESS CHICKEN
Fruita, Co --- I biked from Fruita to Moab, nearly 100 miles with no services. First night I camp just out of view of the road. Wind came up overnight and blew my tent down.
at the hostel in Moab, Ut. Denali cooks at the hostel when he's not traveling and photographing national parks across the country.
ARCHES NATIONAL PARK
I hung out in Moab for four days. Camped at the Lazy Lizard Hostel - $8/night - showers and kitchen access.
BACKROADS NEAR MOAB
Biked dirt roads from Moab to Green River, Utah. Camped in Green River then Hanksville.
CAPITAL REEF NATIONAL PARK
Hiked and camped in the park.
CAPITAL REEF NATIONAL PARK
Holed up in a cabin. $26/night for two nights until the snow melted. Then biked over a 9,000 foot pass to Boulder.
UTAH - SOMEWHERE
BRIAN HEAD SKI AREA
NEAR BRIAN HEAD
Petroglyphs. Spiritual center of the world.
In Utah and Nevada I saw hundreds of beer bottles in the ditches. Mostly Bud Light. I understand people like to throw bottles at highway signs to see them break.

STILL ON US 50
The ride across Nevada was hot and shadeless. Virginia City was higher and a bit cooler.
WILD CAMPING NEAR LAKE TAHOE
Biked down California 88 toward Sacramento. Beautiful.
Hung out with Chris and Alia in Sacramento for a few days.
Chris rode with me for half a day toward Yuba City.
Or could be dinner - I ate a quite a bit of peanut butter. Protein.
NEAR REDDING, CA
TRINITY WILDERNESS IN NORTHERN CA
Big climb and a full day glide down along the Salmon River.
MORE TRINITY WILDERNESS
Some say this is the longest single lane road in the US. Beautiful and quiet. Camped in the woods and hardly saw a soul.
MIGHT BE THE SALMON RIVER
I biked over Bald Hills to the California coast. Then Up the coast to Washington State. Most people bike north to south on the coast to take advantage of the wind. Regretfully, not me. I would start biking at daybreak to get some miles in before the breeze picked up.
Many state parks in California and Oregon have Hiker/Biker campsites. These are community spaces where no reservations are needed. And it's just $5/person. Includes a shower. Cape Blanco is the the furthest point west in the contiguous United States. High above the ocean, breezy, cool, and usually foggy.
I bike across the Astoria bridge. 4.5 miles of narrow-shouldered, logging-trucked terror.
ILWACO, WASHINGTON<br/>I arrived at this tiny town in SW Washington early on a Saturday morning. Artists were setting up for a fair.
IN SEATTLE AREA
I hung out with friends Steve and Natalie and my cousin Bill (who took me to a spectacular restaurant overlooking the sea.) For part of a Burning Man project Steve made these lighted jackets (they are programmed to flash, and change colors ---- skip it, you would have to see it live. We walked their dog in these getups.
GUN SHOP MADE FROM A CHURCH
Took a ferry from Seattle to Alaska with long lost cousins Kathy and Bob + Kathy's husband, Dan. Hung out with my cousin Bob for a week. Stayed in his condo right in town.
Bob and I hiked to the top of this mountain and looked out over the harbor.
All brothels (over 30) were forced to move to one area of Ketchikan along the creek, a hundred years ago. Now they are gift shops and cafes.
I did not catch it. Bob and I were just hanging out on the docks and a fisherman came in with his catch.
We boated to the airport on Bob's boat and even camped overnight near an island.
BOB'S LITTLE BOAT
We patched a hole, got the motor running and took it out for a spin in the harbor.
BACK IN SEATTLE
Flew from Alaska to Seattle. Here is an old beer sign I saw while biking through South Seattle.
Stayed with friends John and Kim in Seattle. Got to play with the dogs.
I felt like I was in the rainforest on this bike trail east of Seattle.
I was told to check it out. Only a mile out of your way. I'm glad I did.
SCENIC HWY 30
Along the Columbia River.
Also on Scenic 30. This falls is the most visited natural attraction in Oregon.
I got to see a couple days of action at the Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Or. This is my cousin Bill, who told me about the event and brought me up to see the place Steve Prefontaine crashed his car.
A beautiful whitewater river in southern Oregon.
